Aha Moments on Wholeness

About fourteen years ago, I had my first “aha” moment as it pertained to my health, my eyes were opened to the power of the human body to self heal & self regulate and the concept of Innate Intelligence. That day I realized the power of chiropractic and the importance of having a nervous system free of interference as well as the devastating affects of stress on the human body.

I can remember that day like yesterday, I can remember the feeling of frustration for not having been told my body’s design & purpose but I also felt a sense of hope that washed over me knowing that health, healing and happiness were well within my reach.

That day marked a pivotal day in my life and I began my journey into understanding my human body and gaining more understanding as to how I could empower my body and unveiling my birthright of true health, healing & happiness!

I believe true wellness is wholeness, a balance in the seven aspects of life: physical, chemical, familial, spiritual, finances, thought, emotion & environment. I do not believe in one-sided wellness for the sum is greater than any individual part.

For me it’s a deep relationship with God, regular chiropractic check ups, proper nutrition, plenty of water, movement, deep and meaningful relationships, financial balance, positive thought and daily use of essential oils.

doTERRA essential oils are an amazing tool to help balance all areas of life facilitating the body to remain in homeostasis/balance allowing health, happiness, and healing to innately occur, as it’s designed to do so.

I truly believe that these gifts of the earth are vitally important in every home because “life happens” and it is better to be prepared for it to happen,  but also because they are an important daily habit for individuals seeking a “wholeness lifestyle”.

Who’s really in charge of your health, happiness & healing?

“The time has come for individuals to take back the reigns of health care and steer their individual journey to Health, Happiness, & Healing.”

-Dr. Martha Nessler

Who’s really in charge of your Health, Happiness & Healing?

Is a tough question to ask and a tough question to answer, but it’s important to seek inward and ask yourself an important question, “Who holds the reigns to your human body and your human experience?”

Too many people have handed over the reigns of their health to other individuals, professionals, family members, or other individuals to make decisions for them as it pertains to THEIR human body …

… They are too discouraged, too sick, too over it or more and have relinquished authority of their human body to others … but, only YOU can truly care for your human body … no one else can … it doesn’t hold the same value.

The TRUTH is that every human being at birth is born with FULL RIGHTS to have Health, Happiness & Healing … BUT no one ever talks about that … they talk about the disease, the sadness, and loss of health.

Early on we learn about disease, sadness, and lack of health…where is the education, early on about Health, Happiness & Healing?

We wait until someone has lost their health, their happiness, and their faith in healing … then we educate on how to heal and regain health and happiness ….

…. It’s backwards and the process of healing and regaining health and happiness is grueling, it’s always easier to maintain.

In our modern technological society we are more educated on how to maintain our cars and our computers than we are our human body, when the two aforementioned are replaceable, while the human body is not.

We are taught that some organs are “unnecessary” and most drugs are necessary, when in fact all organs may not hold the same value but all have value.

How have we gotten here?  I really have no idea the exact path that humans have taken to get here, although I have a pretty good idea, but it’s not how we got here … it’s how are we going to get back?

Make the choice … I did … trust me you’ll thank me.  It starts with the choice, which is the foundation; we then build from that point.

I have decided to share my journey, my passion, my education, and my deep belief in the amazing human body in a series of blogs … because had I not had my “AHA” moment at twenty two years old when I took back my reigns and began my journey toward Happier, Healthier, and Healed existence I would have needed this too!

I’m going to get RAW and REAL with you about AUTHENTIC WELLNESS, stay tuned if you are inspired!

What’s Dr. Martha Nessler Up To?

One of the most common questions I am asked since my move is, “What are you up to?” and to be honest, I’m up to a few things, one of which is RAW [Real] Authentic Wellness the rest is ever evolving.

With the massive push toward wellness the need for a hub was evident – there are so many sites on “wellness” it can be daunting trying to separate real wellness from the “hype”.

I am very open, that I have not always been a wellness junkie, although my brother, Jon has always noticed my love and indulgence in all things health – he used to say I collected “health foods”.   There is truth in his words, innately we are born to consume and devour Real, RAW, and Natural foods but we train our bodies to crave synthetic foods and trick our innate into believing we need them.

The concept of altering innate “wants and needs” is why starting wellness as early on as possible in human beings is extremely important, it’s a whole other blog all together and a topic I will be digging into and getting real on, I owe it to the future generations of the world.

Just like most people a sickness/diagnosis/disease really spurred my desire to indulge in the wellness paradigm. I can definitely say that at about fifteen I started dipping my toe in the wellness pool testing to see if it was the right “temperature”, then at twenty-two I got in about waist deep or half way in, and my twenty-six I took the plunge and went all the way!

Personally, I have no regrets on the decision to live “well” and professionally, I strongly support and applaud those who make the shift toward wellness, whether it is a “want to” or a “have to”.

To be real with you, wellness is no longer an option, it is the way, whether you choose now because you “want to” or later because you “have to” you will choose wellness.

With the need of wellness increasing, I saw the need for an online hub, resource, one-stop shop, call it what you will, where people could get information on real wellness for an optimal existence. Yes there are a lot of sites out there, some our amazing and others are simply not wellness (just trying to use the wellness movement for a financial ride), most are laser focused on one area of wellness or a portion of an area, and lots of them are boring and over whelming,

As a chiropractor and professional speaker, my biggest frustration was where to send people to get the necessary info for a balanced life. The look on an individual’s face when you tell them that you are excited they are wanting to maximize their human potential, now go look at these twelve sites is priceless.

People are maxed out as it is, which is usually why they are needing wellness, I literally felt bad knowing some people were completely discouraged by the daunting task of “figuring it out” and others actually felt more stress “attempting wellness”.

To be Real with you, I get exhausted clicking through the numerous websites to get balanced information on wellness and I love it personally and professionally. Thankfully, frustration never stalls me it motivates me, which is not the case for everyone – a hub was evident.

One day, I had this revelation, it was a tap in the shoulder from God followed by a whisper that was crystal clear, “Create a movement to educate and empower individuals, igniting in them the desire to seek health, healing, and happiness through Real, RAW, and Natural ways”.

That was the beginning of what is Raw [Real] Authentic Wellness and what evolves each day to be the hub of Real Wellness keeping it RAW, in the natural state and authentic to human beings to maximize existence.

Simply put, I want to encourage everyone to be REAL Human BEINGs! Will you join me?

The Road Less Traveled vs. The Societal Highway

The Road Less Traveled vs. The Societal Highway

Going against the grain is an exhausting concept.  The concept of going against the flow of society is exhausting and lonely when you really think about it.   The decision to do something different is scary enough, without having to think that you will be alone and exhausted in doing so.  The simple concept of “going against the grain” makes many weary of change.  What if you weren’t going against the grain but rather taking the road less traveled? And you knew others had traveled it and been successful but it just wasn’t the most traveled; it wasn’t the societal norm?

Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one less traveled and that has made all the difference.” This simple quote is how I have decided to view my decisions for me in terms of health, wealth, goals, and choices. About ten years ago I began to really assess what path I wanted for my life. Doing the same things over and over gets us the same results over and over and knowing this to be true I wasn’t sure I liked the results I saw people getting.

As I began to look at society as a whole, I saw poverty, sickness, sadness, low vibration, and many more things that didn’t have the appeal that made me scream, “I want that”.  Knowing that God wanted me to be abundant in all things: health, wealth, thought, happiness, vibration, in any and everything, I knew that the average American was missing something and many were missing a lot of something that I wanted and was created to have.  The realization came that I was going to have to do something different to get different results.

In researching what I wanted for my life I realized that I there were others who had what I wanted, they were out there, they were just fewer in numbers.  Many would say I go against the grain in the terms of health, wealth, thought, goals, and choices; I see it as taking the road less traveled.   There is a combination of senses that comes with the realization that you are traveling a road less traveled, a sense of security and a sense of adventure.

By societal standards I am considered weird because I make choices that vary from the norm, that sway from the road less traveled.  I like to think I simply woke up and liked the feeling of being eyes wide open awake.  It’s really easy to get “sleepy” when you monotonously do the same actions that everyone else does.  When a large amount of people are doing the same thing it creates a force that almost pulls you along and pushes you without having to exert as much will power.  You simply go through the movements.  But when you get a wake up call and acknowledge it you, you realize that rather than living your life you are living the same life as everyone else.  Where is the adventure in that?

We all get several wake up calls throughout life, in relationships, health, wealth, etc. and just like anything it all depends on how we address that wake up call.  Nothing in life has meaning until we give it meaning.  My series of wake up calls led me to ask myself whether or not I was happy where my journey was taking me. Which led me to decide that the road less traveled was unknown but more appealing and has proven its self to be more of a scenic route.  I like to view it as traveling the back roads while the majority is taking the highway.  There is no right or wrong choice as long as you know where the highway is taking you and you approve of the destination.  There is something serene about enjoying the ride you are on as opposed to hanging on for dear life!

Health Is Expensive: Will You Pay At One Time or Over Time”

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Health Is Expensive: Will You Pay At One Time or Over Time”

I often hear that being healthy is expensive.  Like anything else I guess it is all a matter of perception and because perception dictates reality, being healthy could be perceived as “expensive”.  A glance at others perceptions can allow us to shift our perception if we are open to it. There was a time when I lived with the perceived notion that being healthy was expensive until I really began to understand that much like anything a simple shift in perspective can open your eyes to a world or thought process unknown.

I once heard a quote that said, “A man spends all his health to get his wealth and then in turn spends all his wealth to get his health”.  So, it is not being healthy that is expensive but rather it is health in general that is expensive.  It’s deciding whether or not to pay the “expense” of health over time or at one time. It is not whether or not you will pay but rather when you will pay.  In society there are two major paradigms that we are presented with when it comes to lifestyle choices, the medical paradigm or the chiropractic paradigm. Understanding these paradigms will allow you to know if you will pay for your health over time or all at one time.

The medical paradigm is centered on waiting until symptoms and/or disease present themselves and dealing with the “crisis” at that time.  The medical paradigm believes that as humans we slowly break down over time until we die.  It is a crisis-centered paradigm that waits until symptoms present themselves and deal with them at that time.  There is no way of knowing what crisis will present its self or when? A crisis can vary from the flu to a migraine to an appendectomy to heart surgery and the list goes on.  Much like Russian roulette there is no rhythm to their presentation nor is there a way to gage the cost of the crisis.   Over an individual’s life span they can experience one to a few crisis or multiple crisis, with each crisis decreasing their overall quality of life.  There then comes a point when individuals are willing to spend all the money that they have to maintain the final ounces of their health.  In this paradigm the expense for “health” is paid for in one lump sum at the time of service and can vary in cost from thousands to 10’s of thousands or even 100’s of thousands.  An individual’s perspective on the value of money shifts when it comes down to health or wealth.

The chiropractic paradigm stresses the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, which allows an individual to invest on his or herself over time with the objective of maintaining health and achieving longevity.  The chiropractic paradigm is centered around maintaining optimal wellness throughout an individual’s entire life with hopes of remaining in homeostasis and avoiding dis-ease which leads to disease.  Similar to dentistry, chiropractic believes in the importance of maintaining the body’s level of health through maintenance.  Dental maintenance is composed of regular check ups, regular in office cleaning, twice to three times daily brushing, and proper nutrition. A principled chiropractor will urge you to follow a wellness routine though nutrition, exercise, maintaining mental and spiritual balance and being checked regularly by your chiropractor.  Both practices are similar in that frequency of care varies with personal history, whether health history or dental history. In this paradigm you pay small amounts over time with the intent of maintaining the God given level of wellness you were gifted at birth.  This paradigm is true “life insurance”, with low premiums and high dividends.

Each and every individual is given the choice between paradigms.  When choosing your paradigm it is important to define quality of life and get clear on what kind of a life you want to live. While I am a free spirit and thrive off adventure there are some things that are more of a gamble rather than an adventure.  Personally, I’ve never understood Russian roulette, because “what if’? Much like a parent can only raise up a child with “hopes of” but ultimately the child must live their own “hopes” my hope for you is that you will invest in yourself.  I will not argue that health is expensive; “Is it expensive?” is not the question but rather “When will you pay the expense?” Will you pay slowly over time with the mind frame of preserving your health or will you pay a large amount at the end in hopes of preserving your life? If you look at cars they are a considerable expense and we take care of them, in hopes of maintaining them, even though they are replaceable.  Yet, with our own human body we neglect it as if it were replaceable.  Simply shifting your perspective and realizing that you are your most valuable asset and deserve to live your life full out and with full expression of life. When you realize you are worth it, you will realize every dollar spent is worth.  Money can buy anything but a new you!

Do Rx Drugs Work or Do They Just Make it Worse?

Do Rx Drugs Work or Do They Just Make it Worse?

I often get asked, “Why would I go to a chiropractor?” Personally, I ask, “Why wouldn’t you go to a chiropractor?” But, that is because I understand what chiropractic can do to increase an individual’s overall quality of life. Because I know that it not only increased my overall quality of life but also has saved my life.  I know that if everyone really understood what chiropractic would do to improve their overall quality of life and lives of their loved ones that they too would come to know what I know and love chiropractic like I love chiropractic.  Believe it or not there was a day when I was not in the same boat I am in today and had no idea what chiropractic could do for me.

The Verve sang a song called “The Drugs Don’t Work”.  The song’s objective is that the drugs don’t make the pain of a break up better and in fact make it worse, with the main chorus stating, “The Drugs Don’t Work They Just Make it Worse”.  That same statement can be used to explain pharmaceutical drugs; while they make the symptoms appear better they often make your overall body function worse and decrease your overall level of wellness.  It’s safe to say that when it comes to prescription drugs “The Drugs Don’t Work They Just Make it Worse”.

Prescription drug use is on the rise in America.  It not only amazes me how many people take prescriptions but how many prescription drugs individuals take at one time.  I was headed down the same road, so I not only have been there but also get the fear that is instilled by the medical model, the fear that you will NOT be better without the drugs and will not heal without the drugs.  When in fact the opposite is true, our human body is designed to heal itself it, needing no help, just no interference.

At the age of eleven, I started my journey with acid reflux.  Upon recommendation of my medical doctor I began taking chewable antacids.  When those stopped working I was recommended over the counter antacids and when the severity of my reflux peaked I was placed on prescription drugs.  Before I switched form the medical paradigm to the chiropractic paradigm, I was taking a concoction of two prescriptions, 3 over the counter, and carried a pack of chewable antacids with me at all times. I was a prisoner to the concoction that allowed me to enjoy my meals with minimal pain, burping, burning, and bloating.

For me my pivotal moment was my boyfriend at the time, Ryan. Very few people will say that their ex-boyfriend was an angel in their life but for me that is an understatement, Ryan was a lifesaver. Ryan explained to me that sick and dying was an option and that we were deigned to have optimal health.  He explained to me what chiropractic could do to change my life.  He explained to me that the Rx drugs I was taking were simply masking my symptoms and that I was actually getting worse.  He then explained that we as humans were meant to produce acid to aid in digestion and that my spine was subluxated so it was over producing acid.  He went on to say that the reason I went from chewable antacid to over the counter to prescription was because my body was doing what it was supposed to do and that the use of prescription drugs gave my body the perception it was being punished.  He informed me that the subluxation was the problem and the overproduction of acid was the symptom.  The oxymoron about the antacids was clear, my body is supposed to produce acid and the antacids were telling it to stop and because our innate will always balance us, in response to the antacids my body was in fact producing more acid.  Therefore I was actually increasing my overall acid production and making the reflux and bleeding ulcers worse, I was actually making myself sicker, the drugs just gave the illusion that I was feeling better as opposed to functioning better.

Drugs really are an oxymoron; while we feel better we are in fact functioning worse.  After becoming educated, I knew that it was time to switch my paradigm from medical to chiropractic. Within weeks, my life was completely different, not only was I antacid free but I was symptom free.  I was amazed at how great I felt and enjoyed not “having” to take a pill to enjoy my life.  I finally felt “normal” in terms of health.  This was my pivotal “Ah Ha” moment.  This was when I realized that the world needed the same paradigm shift that I had just had, switching from the medical paradigm to the chiropractic paradigm.

The medical paradigm supports the philosophy that we get sicker and sicker until we die, and follow the premise that through prescription drug use the sickness can be subdued.  Many people are under the misconception that drugs “heal” their problem, when in fact they simply mask their symptoms. The interesting thing about symptoms is that they are our body’s way of communicating with us similar to how your oil light lets you know that it is time for an oil change, therefore preventing breakdown by throwing a rod in your engine.  Without an oil light you would not know that you need to change your oil, the same is true of any symptom in the human body: high blood pressure, headaches, leg pain, incontinence, and a laundry list of other symptoms which are trying to alert you that your body needs attention.  Most people perceive symptoms as “negative” when in fact they should be seen as a “positive” as they are keeping the body in homeostasis to maintain proper function and sustain life.

Prescription drugs do a great job of giving the allusion that an individual’s pesky symptoms are gone when in fact they are just being suppressed.  Not only are the symptom not really gone, but the Rx drug often causes more symptoms and actually enhances overall body dysfunction.  Just as the Verve said, “The Drugs Don’t Work They Just Make it Worse” and just like in the song, street drugs mask the pain of a break up; in life Rx drugs mask the problem not make it go away.  Don’t get me wrong Rx drugs do alleviate the symptoms that an individual is experiencing but the underlying problem is still present just not noticeable via external perception. It is also important to make note of the vast array of side effects that are caused by Rx drugs. It is safe to ask,  “Do Rx drugs really make it better or long term are they making it worse?” Rx drugs are not the only option, in fact, most people would are baffled that there is an option besides more prescriptions. I know I was in utter disbelief that I could live my life without Rx drugs. Rx Drugs are part of the medical paradigm not part of the chiropractic paradigm.

The chiropractic paradigm is unique because it respects the human body and it’s ability to functional optimally.  While the medical paradigm says the body “can’t” the chiropractic paradigm says that the human body “can”.  The nervous system, which is composed of the brain, brain stem, spinal cord, and nerves controls every single function of the human body. When the nervous system is functioning optimally, the human body functions at 100%, free of symptoms.  The human body is under constant stressors: chemical, physical, and emotional that occur in our every day life and cause subluxations in the spinal column, which protects the spinal cord, these subluxations cause interference in normal body function.  Chiropractors detect subluxations, which impair nervous system function, therefore removing the problem and not just the symptom.  The chiropractic paradigm’s focus is optimizing overall wellness, where the medical paradigm is geared toward optimizing sickness.

I have never looked back on my decision to switch paradigms, not once in eleven years.  I live a life where I fully express life because my innate is fully expressed.  I am not sick and have no symptoms.  I have not taken pills, whether prescription or over the counter.  I get adjusted regularly and enjoy my life full out.  We all have the opportunity to live a life free of sickness, symptoms, dis-ease, and disease; it is our God born right.

If you need a chiropractor near you, feel free to email me at drm@drmarthanessler.com! I will find you someone to help guide you as you shift your paradigm!

Why Can’t I Get Get Pregnant?

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

“Why Am I Not Pregnant?”

This past year and a half I have been supporting a dear friend as she has struggled with infertility.  Up until recently she didn’t want my expertise. Sometimes our friends and family are the hardest to reach, but through it all she has had my undying support.  After a year of struggling with pregnancy, she and her husband got tested and were both found to be fertile leaving them even more frustrated.  They began giving her hormone injections, which just heightened her emotions, increased her weight, and decreased her hope when nothing changed.  The next step was IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), which landed her on bed rest when her ovaries rejected the eggs and her reproductive system became inflamed. Sitting in her consult with tears streaming down her face she asked, “Why can’t I get pregnant?”

“Why can’t I get pregnant?” is a question that plagues the minds of millions and millions of women a year.  After watching multiple friends and practice members suffer I realized that I needed to write this blog to both educate and give hope.  It is not diseases that are incurable but rather people who are incurable. More so than not women are being told that they “can’t” get pregnant without the help of intervention rather than being told why they are not getting pregnant. Barring significant medical conditions women are meant to be pregnant and by fine-tuning their lifestyle, pregnancy is just around the corner.

It is important to understand that the human body is vitalistic in nature, so it’s function cannot be explained by the laws of physics and chemistry alone.  Many times because the human body functions as a machine, we view it as mechanistic.  But that is not the case because mechanistic function can be explained.  If the human body were mechanistic then each and every time medicine would be a success and that is not the case. In my friend’s case, if the body were mechanistic, the injections and IVF would have worked.

So, “Why are you not pregnant?” The answer is simple, at this time your body is not prepared to carry a child.  The human body is controlled by innate intelligence, which governs the body and keeps the body in homeostasis. I go by the motto, “Your innate always knows.” While that can be a hard one to swallow, you are not in the desert with no water, but rather at an oasis where you can receive the knowledge necessary to boost your innate function and allow your body to function at any even more optimal level.

It is important to understand that at birth we have 100% innate function. We always have 100% innate function and while the percentage of function does not change, its expression does.  Innate expression is altered by stressors; chemical, physical, and emotional. This causes subluxations in the human body, creating interference in the human body therefore disrupting homeostasis.  Infertility is one of the many “symptoms” or dis-eases within the human body.  Dis-ease is the result of altered innate expression and over time leads to disease. In order to alter the expression of innate you must remove the stressors, which are causing the dis-ease.

Now that we know “Why you aren’t pregnant?” let’s work on what it will take to get your body where it needs to be to get pregnant.  First, you need to find a chiropractor to assess your nervous system function by locating subluxations within your spine that are causing dis-ease. He or she will then make spinal adjustments, which will ignite your innate expression. Remember, your chiropractor just performs the adjustment and the innate takes over.  As a chiropractor I never question innate. As for other stressors you will have to start to do what it takes to maintain balanced function…chemically, physically, and emotionally.  Physically, besides getting adjusted, you will need to maintain some form of an exercise routine and stay active. Emotionally, you will need to decrease your stress and stay in a positive mind set regardless of how frustrated and beaten down you feel. Chemically you will need to make sure you are eating the proper foods, drinking appropriate amounts of alkalized water, consuming proper nutrients and minerals, and realizing that pharmaceutical drugs are a stressor to your body.

I have had many frustrated women walk into my office feeling broken, frustrated, and alone…and together with the aforementioned plan; I am now adjusting their babies! Your body always knows.  Remember, it’s not that you can’t get pregnant but rather that the time is not right for you to be pregnant.

Love Thyself First

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Monday, July 18, 2011

Buddha said, “You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” The question is not should you love yourself but do you love yourself? I am not speaking of a vain, self-righteous, selfish love but rather a love of self-acceptance and understanding.

Loving yourself isn’t easy, about four years ago it was brought to my awareness that I didn’t really love myself.  Looking in the mirror and realizing I couldn’t say, “ I love you” to the person staring back at me was an eye opener.  I came to the realization like many that I didn’t really know myself enough to love myself.  It has been a constant journey and much like life it is a journey that continues as long as our breath continues. Learning to love myself has allowed me to in turn truly love others.

When you look in the mirror what do you see? Do you see a person created in God’s perfect image or a myriad of imperfections? To fully love oneself means to have self-respect, a positive self-image, and unconditional self-acceptance.   Loving yourself without reservation or saying “I love myself, but…” It is important to realize every person, bears their own unique characteristics and qualities.  We all vary in talent and ability. No one is perfect and it is those imperfections that make us an individual.  It is important that we know that we all have the ability to work on ourselves and are never done evolving into a better version of ourselves.

In order to love yourself more you must understand yourself more.  Just as in a relationship, getting to know someone allows you to better understand that person and from that understanding comes a greater level of acceptance. Start by realizing you are human and that you have the potential and capability to rise above anything that gets in your way.   It is important that you look and feel your best and to do so you must take care all aspects of yourself: physically, emotionally, and chemically.  You must love yourself enough to want the best for yourself in all areas and not just in a specific area.  Everything in life is about balance and moderation.

Physically, make sure you stay active by exercising and moving about.  Motion is life, making exercise a key aspect of longevity.  Chemically, we are organic beings and not chemical beings, make sure you eat proper foods and take in adequate water.  Remember food is fuel.  Emotionally, take time for yourself and just be still, continually learn, and meditate or pray and listen to God’s sweet voice.  All three aspects are important to maintain an overall level of wellness that creates life’s balance.  Chiropractic is awesome as it maintains nervous system function and addresses all three areas.  It has been an integral part in my journey to love myself for who I was created.

Loving yourself is a crucial foundation for all your relationships, because in order to love another you must first love yourself.  It is impossible to love another more than you love yourself, therefore loving yourself sets the standard for loving others.  By loving yourself more you actually have more love for others and the world needs more love.  So go ahead fall in love with yourself.

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” –Dr. Seuss

Wake Up the Wellness Alarm Clock is Ringing

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

I have decided that I am not weird or normal. Rather I am awake.  On my plane ride to EPOC Omaha I got into an in depth discussion with the two gentlemen, Phil and William, in my row.  They were both at two different places, Phil was newly diagnosed with Celiac and wanting to get into wellness and William was under chiropractic care and living the wellness lifestyle. We had an awesome conversation for the short 1-hour flight. Toward the end of conversation William told me that he loves meeting people who lives a lifestyle similar to his. I told him I wrote a bog about this exact topic where I questioned if a wellness lifestyle was really weird or was it normal.  He responded it’s neither; we are just awake.  I immediately wrote it down and told him that is exactly what we are.  We are awake.

Dictionary.com defines awake as to “wake up, to rouse up, and to come or bring to an awareness; become cognizant.”  As an example it states: “she awoke to the realities of life”.  Wow, to awake to the realities of life.  I know that is what I did.  What many may not know is that I was raised in the medical model.  I thought being sick was normal and that drugs and surgery were a must.  Honestly until I entered chiropractic school and met my boyfriend at the time I thought people who lived the current chiropractic and wellness lifestyle I live were weird.

I can honestly say that my ex-boyfriend woke me up! Very few people will say a positive thing about an ex let alone acknowledge them for waking them up to the power of wellness and chiropractic.  I can remember meeting Ryan when he was an intern and I was his patient.  During our visits he would question the medical paradigm I was under and the medi-practor belief system I had about chiropractic.  We definitely did not see eye to eye. Once he released me from his care and we started dating he began to educate me and inundate me with information.  Truthfully I thought he was crazy but cute and an amazing person. So, I began to try to see his points and began to educate myself. Throughout the years we dated I learned so much and I can honestly say I am the chiropractor I am today because of Ryan and his love of chiropractic.

Before meeting Ryan I was asleep.  Dictionary.com defines asleep as “in or into a state of sleep, into a dormant or inactive state; to rest, into the state of death”.  Wow, into the state of death! Exactly where I was headed.  I was on multiple antacids, taking a combination of prescription, over the counter, and Rolaids to get by all under the direction of my medical doctor. Year after year I was getting sicker and sicker and told that the goal was to stave off surgery for the multiple ulcers for as long as possible.  And that is exactly what happened from about twelve to twenty-one.  At 21 years old I woke up.  And thank God, sickness is not exactly the slumber that allows one to rest and heal as sleep is meant to do.

Since William Merrill reminded me I am not weird I am awake I have been looking around and a lot of people are sleeping.  Sleep walking, which makes it even more dangerous.  I got my wake up call in 2002 when I met Ryan.  I am so thankful that he shared the story with me and held my hand as I transitioned from my deep sleep and slowly gained back my life. I am forever grateful that he woke me up. The majority of the world needs a wake up call.  Their alarm has been ringing but comfortable in their sleepy state they keep hitting the snooze button.  Just like hitting the snooze button can make you late for work or cause you to miss a ride the same holds true in the terms of health.  Staying in the comfortable slumber of the medical paradigm may hold you back from living your life or even worse end your life.  It’s time to wake up there is a life out there worth living and your loved ones want to experience it with you!

Weird vs. Normal: Where Do You Fall?

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Define weird.  I am becoming more and more confused about the word weird and what it means.  I also am unclear as to whether or not I want to be called weird. I am not really sure that I am the weird one.   More and more I am thinking that weird should be the new “normal” and I may just be ok with being weird.   Bottom line I believe that “weird” is really normal.

I love my life and I want to live it full out. I always say that I want to fulfill my purpose and live out my journey rather than have to stop my journey because I am unable to fulfill my purpose.  In other words, I want to be healthy, wealthy, agile, and surrounded by people I love.  It sure beats the alternative: old, crippled, broke, and alone! My wants define my daily actions.  Wanting to be healthy, wealthy, agile, and surrounded by loving like-minded people while I live my life full out means that I need to defy the social “norm”. To get different results you have to do things differently.

It has been said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results equates to being insane.  Our society is clearly insane. It has been proven that working out increases your overall wellness, decreases your chances of heart disease, elevates your mood, and prolongs your life.  Yet, people remain sedentary? It has been proven that a diet high in fruits & vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and healthy fats is the appropriate fuel to run the human body at full capacity.  Yet, people eat processed foods and ignore the negative affects of the chemicals in these foods? Pharmaceuticals are constantly being pulled off the market for their horrible side effects, causing death, and manifesting more symptoms.  Yet, people continue to believe that the newest pill is the magic pill? Water increases our metabolism, rids our body of toxins, and hydrates our cells; it is vital for life.  Yet, people ignore water to quench their thirst with a soda full of chemicals? Artificial sweeteners are neuro toxins and cause cancer and diabetes, and paralyze the belly of the muscle while poisoning EVERY cell in the human body.  Yet, people say they have to have one because they are addicted, yeah they are; they are chemically addicted.  Vaccines have numerous side effects that range from autism to weakened immune system to paralysis to death.  Yet, out of fear people continue to get these poisons injected into them without even knowing why? The list goes on and to me it is all so weird but in today’s society it appears to be normal.

I have a different definition of normal.  I define normal eating as consuming wide ranges of fruits and vegetables, eating healthy nuts and fats, lean meat for protein, and eliminating grains and dairy. So I follow this for my meal plans. Exercise is important, both aerobic and anaerobic, and I believe that movement creates life.  By working out I know I will increase my life expectancy, decrease dis-ease, and eliminate stress in my life and the feel good endorphins are great tool to stave off depression. So I work out 5 days a week. I know that I need water to increase my overall health, rid my body of toxins, and to hydrate my cells and alkaline water is even better.  So I drink half my body weight in ounces a day.  I believe in the power of positive thought and fully respect that my thoughts create my reality. So I do my best to remain in a positive frame of mind I know that we are not chemical beings and that drugs alter my natural state.  I cringe when I read the negative side effects and have no desire to make one symptom leave and replace it with another.  I know that humans are self -healing and that a balanced nervous system equates to a system free of dis-ease.  I know that dis-ease leads to disease so my chiropractor checks me once a week. I know the power of chiropractic so I get adjusted.   The combination of all the above provides the recipe necessary to live an optimal life.  To me this is normal and to others I appear to be weird.

Weird vs. normal, much like life it is how you look at it.  So, what am I? I’m me and I plan on living my life full out and enjoying every minute of it.  I want to make the most of my journey and make memories along the way.  I want to be pain free, healthy, wealthy, peaceful and in the company of great friends.  And most of all I want to bless others and share my love of life and my knowledge of wellness and if I get called weird along the way so be it! Weird or not you only get one life, live it full out.
