Human Body Users Manual

What if your birth included a “Human Body User’s Manual”?

The pursuit of Health, Healing & Happiness; begins with Education, Empowerment & Execution.

Dr. Martha Nessler

What if your birth included a “Human Body User’s Manual”?

There is a significant lack of education on the human body and it’s function…I can’t help but think how this would all be different if we came with a user’s manual!

Although it’s likely that the majority of people wouldn’t take the time to use the manual anyway!

The “Human Body User’s Manual” would have to be an easy read, simplified and digestable.

Congratulations! You have been given a beautiful gift, a human body.

It is important to realize you can not make any returns  or exchanges on your human body and that you were created exactly as you were to be created, your Creator made sure of that.

Now that you have your human body it is imperative that you understand you are responsible for the love, care, and attention needed by your human body; the upkeep of your human body is solely your responsibility.

You are responsible for the amount of love and respect your human body receives, do not expect others to love  and respcect your human body the same as you love and respect your human body.

Knowing this truth, it is important to take into consideration anything and everything that is recommended to you about your human body before you make decisions considering your human body.

Remember, you only get one human body and there is a strict no return and  no exchange policy.

Everyday Function:

Your human body possess an innate intelligence and is self-governing & self-healing.

Innate Intelligence assures your heart will beat, your lungs will breathe, your food will be digested, your legs will move your body, your fingers will type, and all other internal and external function is under the control of the central nervous system; similar to universal intelligence assuring the sun will rise and set, your internal functions will occur.

The central nervous system is the master system and directs all other functions of the human body, it is wise to have your nervous system assessed regularly to assure all messages are being relayed from the nervous system.  It is important to know that stress impairs the function of the nervous system and effects the human body’s ability to self-govern and self-heal.  There are seven areas of stress that have an effect of the function of your human body: chemical, physical, emotional, familial, financial, spiritual, and environmental.

Stress comes in two forms eustress or good stress and distress or negative stress.

The human body will send you signals when it is in a state of stress or dis-ease whether it is eustress or distress.  These signals come in the form of, but not limited to: diarrhea, aching head, sore muscles, constipation, palpitations, or other maladies and it is imperative that you acknowledge the signal and seek immediate balance.  These signals are the number one communication your human body has with you, please do not “shut them off” instead “balance them”.

The truth about stress is some of it is within your control and other stress is beyond your control–do your best to not contribute to the interruption of your human body’s function via unnecessary stressors.

Everyday Maintenance:

Body Fuel:

You are responsible for what you put into your human body, the fuels you put into your body will determine the function you will receive from your body; “organic fuel” is recommend for enhanced performance.  Your human body is organic within nature and utilizes “organic material” fuel, which is why consuming “whole foods” is the best fuel for your body.  You are not “man made” and “man made fuel” may impair function.

Organic fuel is a term for all the fuel that comes from the earth and when “organic”, “grass fed”, and/or “natural”  can be used, do so, it is the purest form of fuel.

Body Function:

Your are responsible for all your human parts both inside and outside, remember the internal function is governed by Innate Intelligence but, you are still in charge of any interference and maintaining integrity.

Your human body needs to be kept moving … motion is life.  The more you keep your body moving early on the more your body will move later.  The limbs of the human body require motion externally to stay lubricated internally.   Your thoughts control your reality, keeping positive and motivating thoughts will empower and inspire your human body to function better, think of it as fuel for the mind.

Dis-Ease and Emergency Management:

In the case of dis-ease or even disease it is important to remember “there are no returns or replacements” it’s easy to forget when adrenaline is rushing and your human body is in “flight or fight” mode and trying to save your life.   Even in an emergency, do your best to stay in control of your human body and seek to become properly balanced.

It is advised that you seek and utilize “organic and natural solutions” first and that you have your nervous system assessed by a healthcare professional, such as a chiropractor to assure that there is no interference with your Innate Intelligence.

In case of an extreme emergency, when your human body is in danger, it is important to have council pre-established so that you have someone who can help to make decisions for you and your human body.   It is advised to establish your “council” in advance and making sure they to understand the importance of education, empowerment, and execution and have a fundamental belief in a human’s right to Health, Happiness, and Healing.

Do remember that your human body was created with intention and came with all necessary parts and organic chemicals, it is not lacking.

If it is recommended that you remove a piece of your human body, it is your responsibility to gather all necessary knowledge and to ask a plethora of questions and assure that you have exhausted all possible “natural solutions” because you cannot just go buy a spare part.  Additionally, it is extremely important to realize that if in the event of an emergency, removal of a component of your human body such as an organ becomes necessary in order to sustain life, then certain and necessary modifications will need to occur because every aspect of the human body is important!

If you are recommended a “man made chemical” for your organic function please realize that it is your responsibility to assure that you have learned what the chemical is for, why you need it, long term side effects, and any other information as it pertains to the “man made chemical” and it is advised that you seek “natural solutions” when possible.

MOST IMPORTANT PLEASE remember:  you are solely responsible for you human body and there is a strictly no returns, no exchanges policy!

“The time has come for individuals to take back the reigns of health care and steer their individual journey to Health, Happiness, and Healing”.

Take Back the Reigns to H H & H

But, in order to achieve the three H’s: Health, Happiness, & Healing, individual’s need the three E’s: Education, Empowerment, & Execution; this manual is a MUST READ.  The three E’s: Education, Empowerment, and Execution are crucial in the pursuit of Health, Happiness, & Healing!  The truth is there is a major lack of Education and Empowerment, which diminishes the likelihood of execution; it’s difficult to execute that which you do not know or without the power to know you can.

The shift begins with you, by …

 asking more questions,

doing your research,

and then making an informed  and educated decisions.

“The pursuit of Health, Healing & Happiness begins with Education, Empowerment & Execution.”

Innate Expressions is Joining Back Talk Systems…A Blog Leads to a Beautiful Thing

I recently had the pleasure of vending next to a true legend in our profession, Dr. Rob Jackson of Back Talk Systems, while at Parker Vegas Seminars…it was a pivotal moment for us both! It’s funny how God places us in the right place at the right time! When one person shifts it seems to become an epidemic and before you know it you see the whole world shifting!

After Parker, a friend and colleague, Dr. Gina, sent me a “Practice Tip” she had received from Dr. Rob Jackson.  She informed me that I had to read it.  As I read Dr. Jackson’s blog I was smothered by a sense of humility as I read the words of one of the true giants in our profession (I have included the “tip” and the link below – If you don’t get Dr. Rob Jackson’s Tip of the Week you need to change that!).  I am honored that Dr. Jackson took the time to share his heart and am humbled by his kind words.

What Dr. Jackson doesn’t know, is that my first time to Parker was as a student in 2003 I blankly stood in awe watching the mass of people attempting to get his products and to pick his brain. A thick fog of  respect loomed in the air for a man who lives, breathes, educates, and represents our profession relentlessly.  I have to add I also thought it was cool that he and his brother, Dr. Dave Jackson, were siblings and so well respected in our profession (Knowing them both today personally and professionally, I know they are not blood brothers but TIC brothers!).  I can tell you having spent 4 days in Las Vegas in a 8 X 20 booth space that Dr. Rob Jackson is everything I remember standing in awe of 10 years ago – he is a true gem and an amazing human being and the fact that he is a chiropractor is a bonus! And he has Zach who oversees Balk Talk Systems for Rob which only enhances all of his amazing attributes! Thank you Rob and Zach!

We all know seminars in chiropractic are like kids camp! And just like kids camp you walk away with new friends and pen pals; after chiropractic seminars you walk away with new friends, knowledge, and products and this time as an added bonus I walked away proud! I am eager to announce that Innate Expressions will now be available at Back Talk Systems @ www.backtalksystems.com.  I am excited that Dr. Rob Jackson is helping me share what I love and allowing me to really shine! Dr. Rob and Zach, know that Dana and I loved EVERY minute that we were able to share with you  in your energy! I am looking forward to a bright and shiny future with Back Talk Systems! Dean is eager to meet you and so thankful that God placed you in our lives!

Practice tip of the week, January 12th, 2014
Date: January 12, 2014 | Time: 9:05pm | Posted By: Robert D. Jackson, D.C.

I just came back from a 3 day event held in Las Vegas where Doctors of Chiropractic get together from all over the world to hear some of the best speakers in the profession share what the latest research, technique advancements, patient care and vendor services have to offer. I attended my first one of these programs back in 1981 and have been going back ever since, as this is one of the biggest and well attended programs put on like this held anywhere. One of my favorite things is that I was able to catch up with some friends that I haven’t seen since last year at the same program. I was also able to see and hear some of the speakers share new and important information, especially considering all that is happening now in the United States with the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act. Last but not least, I was able to see the vendors who bring the latest and greatest products to show to the rest of us so we can stay as up to date as possible with the newest ideas and technologies that have arrived. Since I am also a vendor at this event, an experience that I had while working in my booth is what I want to share with you all as my practice/business tips for this week.

I will start with a little background to set the stage for my tips. We had purchased out booth space about one year ago, making a reservation for a spot that would give us two sides of the booth to work from, both the front and one side, because we chose an end cap that was next to part of a hallway going in and out of the main vendor hall. Due to the number of products that we show and offer at an event like this, our location is an important choice for us to be able to display everything we want and need to be able to show to our customers who are there at the event. When we arrived, we learned that the show sponsor had sold space to another vendor and squeezed them in on the one side of our booth that was supposed to be our side facing the hallway. We were now kind of “stuck” in the middle between these two other vendors with only the small 8 foot section of our table out front to display our materials. This kind of last minute change in the floor plan is the kind of thing that can make a person go ape crazy when they get to an event because it can change everything you planned to be able to do while there. Having spent the money a year before to “guarantee” our spot, this did create some real heartburn for us as we had to try and modify everything we had to offer at the last minute and our attitude and disappointment were palpable and very apparent to say the least. We had plans to go and chew on someone’s back side, but they always have a clause in the contract that says they can change things any way they want or need to at the last minute and you don’t really have a say about it. You just get to be unhappy and deal with it you own way. I”m giving you all of this back ground because my tip is really about how the person who was added in next to us at the last minute acted and how she turned the whole weekend around for us with her behavior and with how she did it. As I watched her do this I was challenged to offer these behaviors as my tip of the week because they had such a profound affect on not only us, but on everyone she came in contact with at the event. Here is what she did and these are the things I challenge each of us to do as well if we really want to make a change in the outcome of working in our businesses this week:

1. Let’s call this person Martha (because that is her name) and that will give us a point of reference when I describe what she did when she walks into a room. The first thing she did (and does) is notices everyone else who is in the room and looks to see if they need help or are in need of anything. Instead of putting herself first and just paying attention to what she wants or what she needs, she looks to see if there is anyone else that she can help to achieve, acquire, serve, or reach out to, if even just to recognize them and say hi. She was like a breath of fresh air every time she walked into the booth area. She made everyone she saw feel like they were important and made direct eye contact and made sure they knew she knew they were there. In our case, she knew we had given up something in our booth and that she was kind of thrust into her position without anywhere else to go, so she took charge and rearranged her booth next to ours in the best way possible to give us both as much space up front as she could and we shared an exit point from the side behind her booth so we could both take advantage of all that the “customer traffic flow” could offer as they went back and forth to their classes. She didn’t have to do this, nor would most have even offered. This type of work is highly competitive and there are only so many dollars available to be spent by those in attendance and we are all chasing after them in one way or another with our products and services that we offer.

2. The second thing she did was she had excellent help! Her staff was knowledgeable and assisted her almost effortlessly as they both worked to serve their customers with the products they were offering at their booth. Either one could leave and take a short break and she gave up nothing when she left the booth for a minute as her staff (Dana) was well versed in the product line, the pricing and the payment structure and procedures. (Only when both were gone and I was left to watch their booth did they really give up potential sales and customers) 🙂 Of course that didn’t happen much, but they serve a niche and they serve it better than any other vendor that I have seen at this event in the 33 years that I have been attending.

3. The third and most important thing that Martha did was she made every person who walked by, came up to the booth to look, or eventually bought something feel like they were making the smartest and best decision of their lives. Everyone who took advantage of her offers left with big smiles on their faces like they were kids in an ice cream shop walking out with their favorite flavored ice cream cone on a hot day. Martha gave more hugs (when appropriate) more sincere compliments and more positive affirmations, while also giving some direct criticisms when needed to anyone and everyone she spoke with. She was brutally honest with everyone she saw, but still everyone walked away like they had just been sitting at the oxygen bar and getting some fresh air for the first time all day. I watched a number of customers come back again and again every single day just to get another small taste of her personal touch and attention. She literally made our awkward and crowded booth situation that at first looked bleak and very distasteful, a complete joy and profitable experience for everyone in both our booth spaces. She was like a controlled Tsunami that never stopped affecting everything she touched until she went to bed at the end of each day. All of this after flying all the way to Las Vegas from New Zealand and getting little or no sleep to speak of the first day and night due to time zone changes and jet lag. I’m telling you she was a sight to behold! My favorite line was when one of the publishing vendors came by to ask her to buy advertising space in their trade journal and she looked at them and said “I don’t need to buy advertising baby, I AM advertising!” Enough said. She was all that and more!

So if you can’t pick out my tips for this week, here they are in short to help you take advantage of them. Remember, Martha didn’t have to buy anything, she didn’t have to wear anything different or unique, she just “WAS” everything we mentioned above. Here is the short list for you:

A. Focus first on finding ways to help others get what they want and in the process, you will get what you want (and then some!)
B. Make sure you surround yourself with quality people who are like minded, skillfully trained and can help you accomplish what it is you are trying to do. Take the time to train them well so if you are gone, sick or just not available, the job can still get done and you will be happy with the outcome.
C. Make sure you have passion in your life for whatever it is you choose to do or have to do this week. If your job is picking up garbage, be the best garbage person your customers have ever seen and live your life like this might be the last chance you get to show others how amazing you are regardless of what it is you are doing!
D. Hug those who need or deserve a hug this week. Research says we need 8 hugs a day to stay healthy.
E. Compliment those you come in contact with whether you know them or not. Be the change or positive person you want others to be as well. It’s contagious and it will create a more positive working environment for you to flourish in this week and it will change your bottom line and the opportunities that you will have as a direct result!
F. Be honest and direct with your communication with others. (Remember that we offer the best customizable communication tools available to the profession at www.backtalksystems.com if you need some help with this area of your business)
G. Be a controlled Tsunami this week with your family, friends and those at your work place. Get there early before everyone else gets settled (this will shake up most of your friends and co-workers all by itself) and just start by cleaning off your desk top and get things ready for your day. Then just keep going with that positive momentum and see how contagious it is and how much a small change like this can make for everyone you come in contact with.
H. Share your story with me after your week is over. I want to hear what worked for you and what didn’t. Then we can both figure out the whats and the whys and change that for the better.
I Share this with someone you know who can benefit from what we wrote here. This goes back to point A listed above. Help someone else get what they want and it will come back to you over and over again.

I’d just like to say thanks again to “Martha” for a wonderful experience at the Parker Seminar event in Las Vegas this past weekend. You were a pleasure to observe, learn from and work next to while watching you overcome the obstacles that seemed to appear daily from nowhere and you still made your business more successful in-spite of the challenges we all faced in the process. You were a great example for all of us! Thanks for inspiring my tips this week.

The Thot-Flash: Educated vs. Innate

The Thot-Flash: Educated vs. Innate

Sunday as I was checking out in the grocery store and I casually said, “Hello!” to the kind gentleman behind me in line.  He was somewhere in his late 70’s, had on what appeared to be is Sunday cowboy hat, a long beard that had stood the test of time, and around his neck was a blue tie that had a scripture written on it.  He was a kind man and the combination of his warm smile and adorable attire brought an immediate smile to my face and warmed my heart.  We exchanged a few words and then silently I waited for my total.  Immediately as the cashier said, “That will be $43.76.”

He said, “Will you get mine too?”

Innately I responded, “If you need me to I will.”

He shrugged and said, “No, it’s all good.”

I told him that is was no trouble and that God blesses those who bless others so I was more than happy to take care of his groceries.  He again said it was “ok”.  Innately I knew it wasn’t.  As I gathered my four bags I realized his purchase was small containing only a 12-pack of toilet paper and some Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice.  I watched him for a second as he looked thru his wallet and fumbled for cash and my Innate kept nudging me to pay.  I didn’t know how to pay for his groceries without embarrassing him at that point but internally my Innate was having a dialogue with me that I should pay.  I turned and walked out of the store, while I was leaving the scenario my Innate was very much still in the previous scenario and I began to know I SHOULD have paid for his groceries and NEEDED to pay for his groceries.  As I loaded my groceries and began to back out of my parking spot my Innate began to get louder, if your Innate is anything like mine when it gets loud you listen.  So, I reach in my purse, pulled out a twenty and sat in my car waiting for the gentleman to exit.  My educated mind began to interfere and cloud my mind with thoughts: “You can’t just give this random guy $20!” and “You are going to look like a stalker waiting for an elderly man to get in his car.” and “Have you lost your mind?” Just as he got in his car my educated mind began to take the lead and I began to drive off and just as I was about to leave my Innate got loud and said, “WHAT? Are you doing? There is a reason that man asked you to pay for his groceries.  There is a reason you were there in line at that EXACT moment in time.  There was a reason you reached out to him with a warm hello and he reached out to you for help.  Now turn around and give him that twenty dollar bill!” I immediately turned around parked behind him as to block him in (now I am a crazy lady not only stalking an elderly man but barricading him in his parking spot!), I jumped of my car with the $20 in hand, knocked on his window quietly and as he opened the door I handed him the cash and lovingly said, “God wanted me to buy your groceries and I want you to have this money.”  I also, told him that he was loved and that his smile warmed my heart.  Tears filled his eyes and he said, “You don’t have to.”

I replied, “I know I don’t have to, I want to.” I then scurried away as to end the conversation and to assure he kept the money.  As I drove off, in a state of gratitude, I silently thanked my Innate for the thot-flash that prompted me and for its persistence in the matter.

We all have an Innate or we wouldn’t be alive and we all get thot-flashes; whether or not we heed them is an individual decision.   The irony is that rather than listening to Innate many people allow their educated (worldy) mind to cause an intervention and silence Innate.  In The Glory of Going On by BJ Palmer, Vol 37 in Chapter 5, How Does Innate Contact Education. BJ begins the chapter by attempting to (if possible to put truly put into words) the greatness of Innate.  He reminds readers that “Innate was immaculate enough to conceive, build, direct, control, regulate, and repair the building of a complete unit of a child in uterus in 280 days, surely it was immaculate enuf to tell the petty education of a few short years what to do, where, when, and why. (p. 57)” Really think about the complexity of a human, how a human begins with two tiny cells and in nine months there is a tiny person that emerges from the womb.  I am awed each time I see a newborn knowing that innate had perfect intention and in the eyes of that child that intention shines. Yet, we as educated people question Innate.   Because we don’t understand something and want to know when, why, where, what, and how or we wonder what others will think or how they will respond. But who is in charge?

In my opinion, the major misconception that educated beings have is that they are in charge. This could not be father from the truth.  We are in charge of nothing and Innate is in charge of everything and when it all boils down it really doesn’t matter who, what, when, where, or why because it will “just be” because the intention is so.

What do you do when Innate speaks? Do you listen and act or does your educated mind cloud Innate’s perfect intention. Do you question Innate and try to get an educated meaning and understand the why, when, how, where, and what? Each day I find myself becoming more and more Innate and trusting more in more in perfect intention and realizing more and more its not about me or what I think should be.  Ultimately, you have to ask yourself, “Do I trust Innate?”

Personally, I strive to be still and allow my Innate to flow from the above, down, inside, and out and trust in Innate’s perfect intention.  Yes, there are times my educated mind creeps in, like yesterday when it tried it’s best to sway me, but when I silence my educated mind and allow Innate to preside I always smile and know that all is as it should be and that it is always as it is intended.

May your Innate always flow from the above, down, inside, and out.

Integrity Must Be Restored to the CCE: Act Today for Chiropractic Tomorrow

We are at a critical time in chiropractic, where we have the ability to take the reigns back and guide our profession in the way in which it was intended! I am not speaking in regards to style of practice but to scope of practice. The scope of practice has always included and should always include the statement “without drugs and surgery”. The chiropractic profession began as a drugless profession and to preserve its integrity it must remain a drugless profession. More and more there are groups within the profession, such as the ACA who are seeking to change the scope of practice to include drugs and surgery. As a profession we have to step and stop this ludicrousness. It is imperative that we make changes throughout the profession to preserve the profession. The Chiropractic Council on Chiropractic Education is the governing force behind the curriculum taught in chiropractic colleges in the United States. To change the though pattern of chiropractors we must change the thoughts being put into the minds of chiropractors. The CCE currently controls and has controlled chiropractic as a profession by dictating to the schools what they must educate on in order to be accredited. But, rather than taking us farther as a profession, they are taking us farther from the foundation of our profession! Each year we have moved farther and farther from the principles from which we were established and as long as the CCE is in control we will continue to move farther from those principles. Rather thank learning more chiropractic while in school students the curriculum is and has been weighted heavy in medical curriculum. We are producing medi-practors because the CCE has set it up that way! Stopping this train of thought before it even begins is crucial to preserve the principle of chiropractic. Right now we have a small window of time to begin to restore the integrity to the CCE and therefore to chiropractic! Every five years the CCE is up for renewal of recognition by the USDE, this is that year. We have accomplished the first step necessary, letting the USDE know that CCE needs to be re-evaluated, re-structured, and re-formed. They have heard our cry and in December there will be a hearing where representatives from our profession will be addressing the issues of the CCE as it stands today. I applaud those of you who took time to share your heart and passion by writing letters to the USDE your cry did not go unheard! Thank you and now its time for the next leg in the journey to regain integrity to CCE. As an added strength to our case we need the support of politicians to make our case stronger and getting their attention is the next step. The support of politicians will be a HUGE support in the December hearing. There is power in numbers and a petition is the best way to show the numbers in regards to support. We have a petition on change.org under the heading. U.S. Department of Education: Restore integrity to the CCE. It is important that we get as many signatures as possible on this online petition. For posting on Facebook and emailing for support you can use the following URL, http://tinyurl.com/reformCCE. Get your community on board, set up a computer in your office and make it easy for patients to sign the petition as well as email their contacts to sign the petition. The support of politicians is crucial and will strengthen our case that integrity must be restored to the CCE. This petition is concrete proof that chiropractic without drugs and surgery is of the utmost importance to all those that are part of the chiropractic profession: chiropractors, staff, patients, advocates, and students. It is our objective that politicians realize the importance in re-evaluating, re-structuring, and re-forming the CCE to preserve chiropractic and, this petition will support that objective. When politicians realize how important the preservation of chiropractic is not only to chiropractors but also to chiropractic patients, students, and advocates our case will be strengthened. And while you are on the Internet get on Facebook, and join “The Movement for Chiropractic Quality and Integrity” and “like” it. Let your stance be known! Take five minutes out of your day and make a video showing your support and calling chiropractors and chiropractic leaders to action! We received this sacred trust from our fathers, D.D. and B.J, they asked us to keep it pure and not sullied or deformed. Today, I am asking the same, I am asking that you join me in preserving our profession. We are chiropractors and what separates us is the use of no external forces, no drugs or surgery. We are a light in a sick and dying world, we must keep that light lit! Today is the day to step up and be heard! We are at a crossroad and have the chance to grab the reigns and re-direct the profession, moving farther away from drugs and surgery and NOT closer. I love you because you love what I love and it is that love that will strengthen our mission. If you need me I am here, email me at drm@drmarthanessler.com! I love you! Love. Laugh. Adjust. Caught the Wave and Got My Spizz On

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

“Caught the Wave and Got My Spizz On”

This weekend as a team, my staff and I,  attended The Wave at Life West College.  It was a fantastic weekend of spizz, being dipped in chiropractic philosophy and love.  At The Wave we had the pleasure of attending the inauguration of Dr. Brian Kelly.  Chiropractic is truly blessed to have such a true visionary at the helm.  When I heard that Dr. Gerry Clum was stepping down as president of Life West College, sadness fell on my heart.  Since the first time I heard Gerry speak I was a huge fan and supporter of his.  His love for chiropractors and the profession was refreshing and combining that with his desire to raise up principled chiropractors made me know that because of him the future of chiropractic would be strong.  Hearing Brian’s heart this weekend put to rest any worries that Gerry’s vision would die as he passed the presidential torch.  After this weekend there is no doubt in my mind that Life West will be producing principled chiropractors, chiropractors that will guard our sacred trust.

Dr. Kelly’s vision does not stop with students but rather encompasses a better understanding and appreciation of chiropractic and chiropractors throughout the world.  Summed up, he wants to create the necessary wave in chiropractic to create a shift in chiropractic and chiropractors.  This past weekend at “The Wave” was a perfect example of his desire to inspire, lift up, and educate chiropractors! He provided a weekend centered around philosophy and abounding in “Tic Talk” from some of the profession’s most inspiring and ““spizzed”” out chiropractors!

“The Wave” is a must attend for next year! Personally, my staff and I had an amazing well-rounded weekend! Dr. Kelley, the talented Tina Carter, and the rest of the amazing staff at Life West Chiropractic College put on a wonderful chiropracTIC seminar! There was the perfect balance between education and fun and even included the historical moment of Dr. Kelly’s inauguration and ended with a luau! The entire weekend was abundant in chiropractic spizzerinctum! All-in-all the first Wave was a huge success and created quite the wave in chiropractic!

As chiropractors it is so important that we get dipped in chiropractic and get “spizzed”! As chiropractors, we give and give, sharing our love of chiropractic with the world and getting re-fueled is important! Just like a motor vehicle, chiropractors needs re-fueled to optimally function! Seminars are great re-fueling stations to get submerged in spizzerinctum! Spizzerinctum is a word made popular by BJ Palmer in the 1910s and 1920s and used to define chiropractic enthusiasm or excitement about chiropractic! From spizzerinctum is where we get the term ““spizzed””!

“The Wave” is one of many great seminars where you can get spizzzed! Another favorite of mine is “The California Jam” aka CalJam put on by Dr. Billy DeMoss and the Dead Chiropractic Society!  I have also heard wonderful things about New Beginnings and am hoping to attend my first New Beginnings this year in October! EPOCs, COREs, DCS, Band of Brothers, 33 DCs, and other philosophy groups are also great venues to get dipped in TIC and to be immersed in spizzerinctum! Wherever you decide to go, GO! Just get re-fueled, get “spizzed”!

Are You In A Relationship Triangle?

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Monday, May 30, 2011

Are you in a relationship triangle? And no I don’t mean a confusing triangle involving you and two other people that is full of drama and question marks. I am speaking of a relationship triangle that involves you, the person you are in a relationship with, and the goals you have for your relationship.  I have used the relationship triangle since I was 16 years old, when I  used it to explain to my boyfriend at the time why we weren’t going to work; we simply had different goals and were headed in different directions.  I have used it many times and it has served me well.

Relationships come in many types with the most common being love, work, friendship, and family.  In every relationship the objective is to grow closer while the level of closeness varies the objective remains to move in a direction that creates a bond of trust and respect.  To facilitate the growth of relationships both parties have to be working toward the same set of goals that will allow the relationship to strengthen.  If both parties are not moving toward the same goals they move apart from each person because one person grows while the other remains idle, barely moves, or regresses. It’s inevitable if one person loses focus of the relationship that rather than growing closer the two parties begin to gain distance and their bond weakens. The relationship triangle is a great tool that allows you to facilitate growth in your relationships.  All you need is a pen, piece of paper, the person you are in a relationship with, and the goals of the relationship.

Draw a triangle, a perfect equilateral triangle.  In one lower corner write your name and draw an arrow pointing up toward the tip of the triangle and do the same thing in the opposing corner with the other person in the relationship Now with that person begin to get clear on the goals of the relationship, clearly write them at the top of the triangle.  When both people are working toward the goals of the relationship then both begin to move closer to the tip and therefore closer together.  When someone begins to get lax or loses focus the two grow farther and farther apart.  The triangle is a great tool to facilitate growth.

I, personally, use the triangle in all my relationships and am now introducing it in to my practice.  The relationship triangle will allow me to help my practice members to clearly define and reach their goals and stay focused.  I place  “Dr. Martha and team” in one corner and the practice members name in the opposing.  At the tip I write out all their goals and ask them to get crystal clear on what exactly health looks like for them if they could have anything they want and what that looks like.   It allows them to clearly define their goals and to know what they are working toward.  The relationship triangle also keeps them accountable because at the top you also write your goals for them so they know exactly what you expect from them.  Expectation management is crucial in successful relationships keeping everyone on the same page and headed toward the same goal.  Giving your practice member a “map” such as the relationship triangle allows them to know where chiropractic is taking them and keeps them on track.  The relationship triangle is a great accountability for the chiropractor and the practice member.  My practice members are responding with enthusiasm and thanking me for the “map”.

Just as this triangle works in practice member-chiropractor relationships it works in all relationships allowing clarity, expectation management, and facilitating growth.  It is important to know where you are headed in any relationship.  I always say if you don’t know where you are headed, how do you know where you are going? The relationship triangle keeps everyone focused!

My Walk Through BJ Palmer’s World

Dr.  Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Monday, May 23,  2011

“Walk a mile in a man’s shoes and you will see what it is like to be him and you may shift your perspective”, my grandmother said this to me any time I began to judge another.  It was an awesome lesson to learn at such a young age and I have used it many times throughout my life.  This is simple lesson has allowed me to view the world with eyes wide open.

This weekend I attended the Winner’s Circle Weekend put on by The Masters Circle in Sarasota, Fl.   Knowing that BJ Palmer had a house there where he spent his last days and wrote many of his books, I had a hunch what one event of the “secret” weekend might be a visit there.  Little did I know the entire weekend I would be walking in BJ Palmer’s shoes?

Friday morning we started the day at BJ’s house.  As I exited the van, a silence swept over me as I realized I was about to walk through the house where BJ walked, slept, ate, had conversations with friends, wrote books, dreamed, passed on from his mortal life, and so much more.  I was overwhelmed with emotions and still at this time I don’t think I could fully list all the emotions I felt; it may take awhile or I may never delineate them.

My journey began walking up the driveway and past his dolphin fountain, his head cast, and his signature in cement I felt a sense of overwhelm realizing I was walking through a piece of history.  I walked up the vibrant, primary stone path that lead to the door and entered into the developer of chiropractic’s home and for the two hours I was allotted I would be slipping into his shoes and see the world as he saw it.  I’ve always loved seeing friends homes, in my opinion, it allows you to see who they really as our homes are expressions of who we are as individuals.

As I walked through his house it was eclectic to say the least, some said it was wild and I even heard “weird” to me it felt just right. I can honestly say it felt like home.  I’ve been through so many museums; my dad wanted us to know our history, and in all the museums I have been through I have never been to one that was so “real”.  Dr. Sid, who has a summer residence next door, did an awesome job preserving BJ’s home and in doing so has preserved BJ’s legacy.

BJ’s house was an expression of who he was a brilliant visionary and took the idea of his father and made it a household name.  Love him or hate him he believed in Innate and knew that’s expression was imperative for full expression of life. His house was much the same, an expression of his life.  The house was filled with history; I thoroughly walked each hallway making sure to absorb every bit of information possible.

I had several pivotal moments but want to share with you the three most pivotal.  As I stood in his bedroom at the foot of the bed in which he passed flipping through pictures and paperwork in plastic coverings.  In one of the plastic coverings was the death certificate of BJ and DD right next to each other.  On the back of the same plastic covering were photos of his funeral.  Even as I write this, I am overwhelmed with emotion. One photo was an image of him in his casket, as I looked at his face laying there tears filled my eyes.  At that time his death was so real and I quietly thanked him for the strength of his vision and for fulfilling his purpose regardless of what anyone thought and regardless of the opposition. BJ is truly a pioneer and he is a man of strength, dedication, and determination. We could all learn a lot from BJ Palmer and the foundation he laid so that chiropractic has its place. We MUST preserve our heritage.

My next pivotal moment was in the same room where I stepped into his giant wooden clogs, they were huge.  The moment I slid my feet into the clogs, I attempted to wrap myself around the realization of what big shoes I have to fill.  I have always thought that but this time my thought was a bit different.  This time I didn’t ask how I was going to get them to fit or wonder when I was going to “grow into them”. This time I just accepted these were my shoes and I would make them fit.  I was handed the shoes of BJ, DD, and many others the day I received my diploma and especially with the current state of chiropractic, I have no choice but to wear them even if I have to shove toilet paper into them to make them fit or wear two pairs of socks.  I also realized I wouldn’t have been given the shoes if I wasn’t prepared to wear them and that it was my own thoughts keeping them from fitting.  Regardless, since that day I have thought twice about the shoes I was called to step into and I have been wearing them with even more pride.

The last moment was extremely personal and hit me at a soul level.  There was a picture on the wall about leadership.  To sum it up, as I don’t have know it verbatim, leadership is lonely at times, the more opposition you face and more you are thought to be controversial the more you are leading.  Isn’t that the truth? I heard many times how “weird” or “strange” BJ was all throughout the day.   Was he “weird”? I guess. Define “weird”.  Personally, I have always been told I was “weird” and I guess just like anything in life its all perception.  In regards to BJ I will say he was eclectic, he was vibrant, he loved life and it’s expression regardless of what others thought, he dreamed big, he knew he knew the truth, wasn’t going to settle for current paradigms, saw a vision bigger than life, was determined to fulfill his purpose, and saw the world in the terms of what he knew could be rather than what won’t be.  Call it “weird” if you want BUT his “weird” got us where we are today. That day in Sarasota, I really resonated with who BJ was and were he came from and realized that “weird” means leader.  That day I realized that being “weird” means your vision is vast, that your purpose is intense, and that your convictions are deeply rooted and regardless of opposition you forge ahead.  In this case I am definitely “weird” and extremely proud.

After we left his house, we headed to the Ringing Brothers Circus Museum.  BJ loved the circus and spent a great deal of time at the circus. The circus was in fact why he moved to Sarasota.  Having heard before of BJ’s love of the circus and questioning it, after seeing his house I now knew why he loved the circus.  It goes back to being “weird”.  The circus is “weird” with the fat lady, the fire breathers, sword swallowers, and vast array of unique individuals; I guarantee none of them ever thought BJ was “weird”.  And as an added piece of info, there was an adjusting table in the Ringling Brothers home!

Saturday we were blessed to have Dr. Simon Senzon share with us even more history on BJ Palmer’s life.  He truly was an amazing man, some information was a refresher and other information was new both took my love and admiration for BJ to the next level.  Having walked through his house just 24 hours prior made me feel that much closer to the developer of our profession and even more grateful.

We could all stand to learn from BJ and realize that we must continually fulfill his vision, not for him, not for us, but for our future.  We are borrowing this profession from our future just as BJ borrowed from us.  May 27, 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of his death.  On May 27th, I encourage you to join me as I sit silently and get even more clear on my vision, mission, and purpose not for me but for chiropractic and as a thank you to BJ for borrowing from me and giving it back better than he found it.

Thank you DD and BJ Palmer you are true visionaries and I am eternally grateful for your strength and determination.

A Celebration of Life or A Celebration of Death?

Monday, May 2, 2011

At my mother’s funeral my father shared his heart and simply said, “I was lucky to known her at all”.  I have lived my life with the premise that when people gather to celebrate my life those who celebrate it will say, “I was lucky to have known her at all”. What will people say when you leave this earth?

This past week the world has had two major deaths, Reverend David Wilkerson and Mr. Osama Bin Laden.  Both men had an impact on society while they served their time on this earth but each impact was very different.  The news of Rev. Wilkerson’s passing brought tears of sadness that comes with the passing of anyone who has such a profound impact.  Upon his death across the world many joined in celebration of his life, his impact, and his accomplishments.  The passing of Mr. Bin Laden was much different.  Across the nation a sigh of relief was felt and tears of joy were shed.  Across the world many are celebrating his passing rather than his contributions.  When you die will people celebrate your life or death?

Personally, I have always tried to live my life so that after my journey on this earth that my life will be celebrated for the contributions and impacts I made. In order for there to be a celebration at the end of our lives we must properly live the first part of our lives.  Janice Hughes says, “How you live one day is how you live your life”.  How are you living your life?

We have multiple accounts in our life.  The one we are most familiar with is a bank account.  In back accounts we make both deposits and withdraws in the form of currency and it is important that withdraws never exceed our deposits.  We also have many other accounts: relationship, societal, health, and a list of others. Just like in our bank account our deposits must be greater than the withdraws.  When the withdraws are greater the account runs dry.  When was the last time you assessed your accounts?

Rev. Wilkerson made many deposits and he served society-making use of his time on this earth.  While I do not know the deposits made by Mr. Bin Laden I do know that his withdraws were that of a large scale.  At their death their accounts were settled and the celebration of life or death was decided.  What does your societal account look like?

I have lived my life and will continue throughout my journey blessing others in anyway that I can and contributing in anyway possible in to all my accounts.  When I pass I want to be remembered for the blessings I was a part of and the lives I touched.  When my account is settled I want my deposits to be greater than my withdraws.  I am not aiming to live a life of perfection but a life worthy of reflection so that those who knew me “were lucky to have known me at all”.

Dennis Perman’s Message of the Week: April 25, 2011

Thank you, Dennis an Honor!

Catapults or Anchors

Dear Doctor:
Death is perhaps the most difficult and uncomfortable of the human experiences – it’s typically beyond us to express our feelings, to cope, and to make some sense out of such losses. Spiritualists conjecture on it — life after death or not, karma or fate, in a better place or just gone, the debate rages on because no one can ever know.
That’s why it appeals to me when someone addresses this necessary part of life objectively, and this happened for me last week when I received a link to the blog of Innate Girl, otherwise known as Dr. Martha Nessler of Springfield, IL, the reigning TMC Winners Circle Chiropractor of the Year. I always read Martha’s writing, but this entry was especially poignant, describing the loss of her own mother when she was only two years old. Look over her shoulder for some profound insight:
“I was finally at a point where I was able to look at my mom’s death for what it really was — a catapult and not an anchor — A catapult propels and an anchor holds you back. All events in our lives have the ability to propel us or hold us back — we allow what we consider “positive” events to propel us, and “negative” events to anchor us. I have pledged to find the positive in all situations whether or not I “feel like it” because when your mother loses her life to cancer at twenty-nine and passes four months after her diagnosis you realize that life truly is too short — The day I began to see my mom’s life and death as a catapult was the day that “we” began to live.
For me I believe people only die if we allow them, while they physically die their spirit can live with us – After dealing with my mother’s death — I decided that I would live my life for my mother and since that day my mother has been my “why”. Her death — drives me to educate the world about living a wellness lifestyle. My mother did all things considered “healthy”. She ate right, took vitamins, exercised, and was a peaceful fun loving person. But, my mother never had her nervous system assessed; she had never been checked by a chiropractor. My “why” is strong and it is my hope that her death allows others to live. I want to make sure that everyone is given the opportunity to live their life full out and that they and their loved ones are not cut short — In my heart, each person I educate takes a little piece of her spirit with them and through their life she too lives.
Death is hard and if we are not careful we anchor to the loss of a loved one and with their death a part of us dies. I have chosen to use my mother’s death as a catapult and have allowed her death to propel me into the life I was meant to live. I have – chosen to live for us both by sharing her spirit and story with the world. Through my mother’s death I have chosen to live and will continue to allow her spirit to live.”
I never knew Pamela Jean Murphy Nessler, but I can say this – she will indeed live forever in the efforts of this powerful young chiropractor to spread the word of health and wellness, and the ripple effect of generations to come who receive the miraculous healing benefits chiropractic is famous for. Only you can choose if the events in your life are anchors or catapults – nothing has any meaning but the meaning you give it. Develop your “why,” tell your story, and live a life of significance.

My Why? for Chiropractic Defined (in the market place)

Dr. Martha’s Monday Morning Motivational

Monday, February 28, 2010

It’s time we get loud and proud about chiropractic! By now many of you know that Mayo came out with  their Guide to Alternative Medicine! In the book, they explained the various types of alternative medicine.  I am glad they are educating the pubic as to what is available for them in respect to wellness. BUT, what has me a more than a little fired up is their definition of chiropractic — it’s just not correct. Am I mad at Mayo? No.  I am frustrated in general and most of the frustration is toward chiropractic. We have to band together and educate the public. Let me me clear…I am not saying we have to pick a technique or agree on a set philosophical definition amongst ourselves.  But what we have to do is explain what we are and what we do to the public.

We need to explain what a chiropractor is and what he or she does.  We need to explain subluxation, mental impulse, cavitation, and innate so that people understand. They need to know the importance of nervous system balance and being checked by a chiropractor regularly.  We need to explain in layman’s terms so that laymen understand why chiropractic is true health.  It is imperative for the health of EVERYONE and the progression of chiropractic.

Within chiropractic I understand that there are various techniques, philosophies, views, and so much more and I am not wanting to get everyone to agree within the profession.   Rather, I am wanting people to know who we are, what we do and why they should get checked and adjusted by a chiropractor! As it stands most don’t know.  As a matter of fact barely 2% of the population gets adjusted! AND what Mayo says is not helping in the matter.   Mayo said we are for pain, maximum 4-6 manipulations, ask your MD, be in charge of your DCs recommendations, and they used the word “cracking”! It is something I can not and will not stand for at all!

My frustration drove me to begin searching the web for chiropractic — “what is chiropractic?”, “what is a chiropractor?”, “what is an adjustment?”, “what is a subluxation?”, and many more topics.  By the end I could see why the average person would be confused.  And many times “quack watch” was the first site to pop up, warning the public against chiropractic.  I knew there had to be a way to get the concrete definition for the public so that they knew what chiropractors are, why they should go, what a subluxation is, etc… This lead me to speaking with my amazing friend and colleague, Lyle Koca.  I told him my idea… he quickly saw both the need and my point.  On this mission he and his wife are my partners to establish ourselves in healthcare — where we belong and that we are correctly defined.  You may ask what was my idea?

My idea is to have a main website, www.thetruedefinitionofchiropractic.com, that clearly explains chiropractic and the whys and whats of chiropractic so that people know why and see the importance.  I have also purchased 22+ sites that will all point to the main site, www.thetruedefinitionofchiropractic.com.  So that when people google chiropractic or anything about chiropractic they get the truth.  Not lies or a version of the truth.  It’s necessary that we preserve chiropractic not only for our current generation but for the future of chiropractic.  Because, as Dr. Brad Glowaki said, “We are borrowing chiropractic from the future.”  We owe it to the future of chiropractic to begin to educate on the TRUE DEFINITION OF CHIROPRACTIC! Please understand that if we don’t educate properly then the world will continue to be misled and miseducated.

Please join with Lyle, Shawn, and I as we work for chiropractic and with chiropractors to set the record straight.  People need to know what we know in regards to the importance of chiropractic care.  They need to know why they should go, what will happen, what we can help, what a subluxation is, and the overall benefits.

PLEASE note: It is not my intent to decide whose definition presides (Stephenson vs. Palmer, etc) or to say one technique presides over another.  But, to get the word out on chiropractic! To educate on a subluxation and the importance of detection and correction.  It is my desire people understand the importance of a proper functioning nervous system and understand innate intelligence.  Plain and simple that more people obtain a chiropractor, get checked, and get adjsuted.

I am not a fighter, I am a lover.  I have no intention of starting another war in chiropractic — we have plenty going on as it stands.  So, I am not asking to re-define chiropractic..it can not be re-defined.  Chiropractic is chiropractic.  I am seeking to make chiropractic known for what chiropractic is and what it stands for since 1895.  So, understand my heart is pure and my passion is intense — I love this profession and am a chiropracTOR.  I will move on to save this profession regardless because it is who I am and I owe it to the future for this is not mine but theirs; not ours but theirs.  So, join with me and help educate the world.  If we spread the word, we can save the world! We have what they need…we have to speak up!

Love. Laugh. Adjust.
